Auf Ruf
Traditionally, a Bride and Groom are honored by the community, at the Sabbath nearest their wedding, with an event called an "Auf Ruf." This includes a call up to the Torah, an "Aliyah."
Our community is The Progressive Chavurah Since the Chavurah holds its services on Friday night, and does not have Torah services, we cannot do a traditional Auf Ruf. Rather, we do what David calls a "Chav Ruf."
A Chav Ruf consists of a Kabbalat Shabbat service, in which we welcome in the Sabbath, lively participatory singing, and a discussion. We will lead the service and discussion, and friends will lead the music. Often the discussion centers around the weekly Torah portion.
All our friends are welcome at the Chav Ruf - Jews, Christians, Gnostics and agnostics, theists and atheists, druids ... even republicans.
Services begin at 8:00 PM in Weintraub Auditorium at Temple Sinai, in Brookline. Here are directions from just about everywhere courtesy of Temple Sinai. Entrance to Weintraub Auditorium is at the side door on the Sewall Street side, closest entrance to the back of the Post Office, where there is a small staircase and a ramp. Please note: we do NOT meet in the main sanctuary at Temple Sinai, although you may find other services in progress there.
Services typically last two hours, and schmoozing continues until 11ish. There is no need to bring food for the Oneg Shabbat after services, all that is taken care of.
